On land sold by Wiliam Rutledge from his 1841 Special Survey, Thomas Lunsden and later James Mannix (1853) successively held this site. Probably Mannix constructed this building as the Market Square Hotel, conveniently located west of the Market Reserve in Albert Street. Construction of The Towers was commenced in 1876 and extended in three stages. It was started by Alfred Hand, a tanner and a member of a family well known in local business, fruit and wine growing. The first stage, a simple cottage, reflects the vernacular traditions of rural Victoria in the 1870s. It was sited on a prominent slope to the north of Lilydale. The site of Ramorinie was originally part of Fenwick's Lot 87 and passed to George Turner in 1856. He bought a small timber house on the site. James Maitland Campbell a Scottish solicitor, practising in Melbourne was looking for a site to build a permanent home and bought Turner's cottage and land.
